# Inkline 0.4.18 — October 7, 2026

## USB devices can work together

- Send combines USB networking, HID keyboard and HID pen. Network defaults to On and has an independent toggle.
- Receive starts immediately and discovers keyboards, mice and supported Ethernet adapters through a powered hub. Modem Off/On/Auto and goTenna Off/On are independent; both can be enabled.
- The one USB-C port uses one role at a time. Several device classes can coexist within that role; Send and Receive cannot coexist on the same port.
- Pen only uses standard USB HID for position, pressure, tilt and eraser state. Windows, macOS and Linux profiles are finger-selectable, with a mouse fallback. HID needs no host companion or SSH transport. Initial installation uses SSH.

## Typewriter and keyboard fixes

- The AlphaSmart-style editor writes locally and keeps several documents in RAM. Files and Send are separate pages with clickable document and directory lists.
- Send queues snapshots from RAM or disk at 5, 10, 20, 40 or 80 characters/second.
- In Send, physical press/release reports go straight to USB without changing the buffer, running an input method or repainting per key. A physical key interrupts the document queue. The host handles repeat.
- Correct US Folio punctuation and number-row reports, including tilde, double quote, zero, parentheses, plus, minus, underscore and equals. Right Alt+0 sends plus; right Alt+minus sends equals. Select a US layout on the receiving laptop for these symbols.
- Fingers operate Typewriter controls and cursor placement; pen and eraser only send HID throughout its pages. Typewriter requires an attached, unfolded Folio. Folding it stops both senders. Tap Editor to stop live keyboard sending.

## Installation, documents and storage

- AppLoad is part of the standard install. After reboot, three quick power-button clicks enable its menu; choose AppLoad → Inkline.
- The installer adds the nine-language PDF guide to My files. Inkline's Documents screen opens original PDFs and exposes paths for notebook/EPUB files. Handwriting overlays are not rendered by the PDF reader.
- A soft keyboard is available when the Folio is inactive outside Receive mode. The terminal pen sends mouse operations when requested by an app, and otherwise selects text; Shift forces local selection.
- Obsolete app releases are removed during upgrades and session cleanup, with running processes protected. Updated utility installers also prune obsolete versions. User documents and settings are preserved.
- Python 3 is an installer prerequisite. If absent, install the Python utility first. Its new 2026-10-07 installer supports 3.27 and 3.28 and uses the unchanged CPython 3.15.0rc2 runtime. Older utility archives retain their previous firmware checks.
- Optional missing radio services no longer prevent USB mode changes when the service is confirmed absent and stopped. Real shutdown errors still abort reassignment.

## Validation and limits

All 28 host CTest checks passed across the full run and targeted reruns. The two macOS shared-memory/socket checks needed unsandboxed access. The Typewriter worker check now waits for process readiness instead of assuming a fixed launch delay. The ARM build and Folio input regression executable passed on firmware 3.28.0.172 without sending live USB input. The Python utility's check-only installer passed on that firmware. The nine-language PDF passes the manual build's glyph, reference and layout checks. Website pages and both blog translations passed desktop/mobile layout checks, with working installation copy controls.

All 1,227 bundled file checksums were verified, including matching ARM code and source. Broader physical acceptance remains for host/application pen pressure and eraser behavior on Windows, macOS and Linux, additional keyboard layouts, and every powered-hub device combination. These are not claims of certification across every OS and app.

Updates preserve open terminals. Quit and reopen Inkline to use the new application. Initial installation requires SSH access and a verified tablet host key.
